Now taking Horses for 2008 and 2009.
Horse training at the Bent Arrow Ranch is a great opportunity for you and your horse. We can start a horse from scratch or take one and make it better in just about any field. We bring the western way and the new methods together into one. Ranch work is included in our breaking. Even if you do not ranch, you will find out starting with a ranch-based horse can give you the ability to move in whatever direction you would like with your horse.
We like to start horses in a round pen for about 10 days. By doing this we can accomplish the following things:
calming them down and allowing them to become comfortable with us.
trust; when first working with them we try to develop trust by letting the horses come up to us so we can catch them, instead of going to them.
flexibility; horses are able to flex and soften their entire bodies, from head to tail.
saddling; we get them comfortable with being saddled and with the feel of the saddle.
riding; finally, we will ride them in the round pen if ready. If they are not ready, we may do more ground work or pony them out of the pen. |
We always ride our horses OUTSIDE the round pen. We believe that horses LEARN faster and BETTER out in the open. When outside we like to:
get them to move out and be able to travel in all 3 gaits.
give them a job like chasing cows, work under a twirling rope and such |
When you get your horse back after 30 days we like the horses to stand when you saddle and mount, turn both directions, stop and back up, and do these things very well. Horses with this good foundation can do just about anything, but you must remember most horses after 30 days are still colts, not finished horses.
With 60 days of training you can expect your horse to do the following:
The base of the 30 day training, including calming the horse, trust, flexibility, saddling, and riding
confidence; your horse will gain more confidence on his feet from being rode an extra 30 days outside of the round pen
experience; your horse will be exposed to cattle and the terrain of our area
handling; easier handling for you and your horse, your horse will be more comfortable with the bit and with that comes more ease with reining, stopping, and changing gaits. |
A horse started with 60 days has a great foundation. The 60 day training program allows for you and your horse to better understand each other. Your horse will better understand what you want from him and this will allow you a better riding experience.
We also do arena work. If horses are not ready for outside riding we will take them to an arena just for the horses safety and ours. We can do training on all types of rodeo horses. The following training can be done: roping, steer wrestling, or any other event you would like. Trail horses can also be trained. I have worked at badlands trail rides, guiding trail rides, for 9 years, giving me the knowledge of what it takes for a horse to be a good trail horse.
Rates for the 2008 year are as listed. We offer the 30 day training program for $600 or the 60 day program for $950 also 90 days for $1500. We also ride broke horses for any reason for $25 a ride. All prices include hay and oats for feed, If you would like to feed something special you must supply it. If you have any questions about what we do please call or email.
